Let your child improve spelling & handwriting autonomously.
Our app combines “pen & paper” and “AI-teacher” to let children in primary / elementary school self-improve spelling confidence.

Autonomous
Child can practice without adult supervision.
Yet, parents and teachers can assign exercises and receive results.
Personalized
Wordlists are adapted to child’s year and curriculum.
Parents and teachers can customize exercises. AI will recommend words based on previous results.
Pen & paper
PenPoints is the only spelling app relying on physical handwriting (using AI to “photo assess” handwritten words…)
How it works
The PenPoints app can be installed on child’s tablet or parent’s smartphone.
Upon account creation, your child is assigned an age relevant set of wordlists that parents can customize.
Child can practice his/her wordlist exercises independently, following those steps:
- WRITE
child writes on paper the words dictated by the app - SNAP
child sends a picture of handwritten words to our AI-teacher - LEARN
child receives results highlighting spelling mistakes or poor letter formation - RE-TRY
child can fix mistakes and retry until reaching perfection
Every week, parent receives an email with results (including photos) about the child’s activity and progress.
Install the app
Whether you are a parent or a teacher, install below linked app on your your device or on child’s tablet.
Then create a free account and try a first exercise before you let children practice in autonomy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PenPoints?
PenPoints is a mobile app designed to help children improve their spelling and handwriting skills. Using age-appropriate lists of words, it combines handwriting with spelling practice and provides instant feedback through Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
Who is PenPoints for?
PenPoints is ideal for children aged 6–12 who are learning to spell and write at any stage of primary school (year1 to year 6) / elementary school (grade 1 to 5) and potentially beyond. The app is especially useful for children suffering from learning disabilities such as dyslexia, yet it is beneficial to all children needing to strengthen their writing skills.
Parents can install the app (on child’s tablet or on parent’s phone) as part of an independent initiative to support their child, or as requested by the class teacher.
Teachers can install the app on their tablet (to manage students/homeworks and run standalone in-class activities called “spellstations”) then invite parents to install the app on their child’s device.
How does PenPoints work?
Children practice spelling words by writing – with a pen, on paper – the lists of words dictated by the app.
After sending a picture of handwritten words to our AI teacher, child receives instant score and feedback to improve both spelling and penmanship.
What kind of words are included in the app?
PenPoints includes grade-level-appropriate wordlists made of phonic-based words, sight words and common exception words, homophones, and statutory words.
Parents and teachers can create (and share) custom exercises to focus on specific challenges.
A note that rule-specific lists are only available to teachers, while “mixed” lists are available to parents and teachers.
This is because rule-specific wordlists (made of words sharing 1 common pattern) make little sense if the pattern is not explained by a teacher.
Can children correct their mistakes before getting feedback?
Yes! PenPoints encourages self-correction, allowing children to review their work before receiving AI-generated feedback, fostering metacognition and independent learning.
A note that the “spellstation” in-class activities do not let children fix their mistakes as it would make the flow too complex and bias the results of the challenge.
Can I create my own exercises?
Yes.
Parents and teachers can create a custom exercise by typing / pasting a list of words, or even by taking a picture of a list of words!
What devices is PenPoints compatible with?
The app is available on iOS and Android devices and is optimized for both smartphones and tablets.
It will ask for the permission to use the camera to take (crop) and send the picture of handwritten words to our AI teacher.
Do I need an internet connection to use the app?
Yes. An internet connection is needed to use the app.
How accurate is the OCR technology?
PenPoints uses advanced OCR technology designed to recognize children’s handwriting with high accuracy.
For best results:
- ensure your child crops the photo to only contain handwritten words
- use 1 row per word, on a new sheet of paper (and repeat word on same row when fixing a mistake during re-try)
- encourage your child to “clean” his handwriting before taking the picture (dots on i, no space between letter, no line breaks,…)
Is my child's data safe?
Absolutely. PenPoints complies with GDPR and COPPA regulations to ensure the safety of your child’s data. We do not share or sell any user data.
Also, we do not show ads in the app.
Is PenPoints free to use?
For now, Penpoints is totally free to use.
During Q2 2025, we will introduce a Freemium model where parents will have the opportunity to pay to unlock exercises or advanced features ; and school will have the possiblity to pay to grant unlimited acess to their teachers.
Does PenPoints support multiple children on one account?
Not for the moment.
Multi-child support will be one of the future Premium features.
Can I use the same account on multiple devices?
Yes!
For example you can use the same account to login on your child’s iPad AND on your iOS/Android smartphone (where you can let the parent mode enabled so you can access resutls and personalise exercices from your phone…).
